How can I view my code when I use QDK?

Author Topic:   How can I view my code when I use QDK?

As a QDK user, I have never really bothered with any code, but I am thinking about starting to teach myself. Is there a way that QDK automatically creates code as I progress, and can I therefore view this code? If so, how? The reason I ask is because I want to see how these things are done. I may want to find out how a certain action is done in code, so I could do it in QDK, then view the code.

On a similar note, how do I completely write games in code? Do I just use the MISC ASL that comes with QDK?

Thanks

The answer to both your questions is NotePad, or a similar text editor.

If you load your ASL file in NotePad you will see its code, although QDK 1.0's code output isn't as clear as code you'd write yourself (QDK 3.0's code, by the way, is lovely).

To write games in code, open up NotePad, load TEMPLATE.ASL and get editing. Alan Bampton's tutorial comes with the Quest 2.19 download and that will get you started - the ASL reference guide will tell you everything else you'll need to know.

Ah, that's how. Thanks. I am working on a game right now with QDK, but I'm going to finish that up before starting one in code since I would have to delay the game's release in order to get the hang of coding.

Good plan. With QDK 1.x I don't at all recommend switching to hand-coding while you're developing, due to the nasty way QDK whacks a load of stuff that should be in braces into procedures instead. QDK 3.0 handles braces properly... and it's coming soon.

GRRRR!!!! DAMN YOU ALEX!!!! DAMN YOU!!!
Damn your temptations of QDK 3.0.... BTW does QDK 3.0 have support for QX3 ASL's? I'm going to get into that stuff in the not-so-far future..... after my up-and-coming game get's finished! But that's too far in the future.
Don't go too far enjoying your work on Quest and QDK 3.0!! Remember that sometimes your friends will HAVE to drag you away down to the pub or disco!

Not yet it doesn't. But the two types of ASL won't differ too much anyway, so it won't be a great pain to add at some point. I need to get it fully supporting Quest 3.0 ASL first!

I've just come back from nine months at uni where I've spent far more hours down the pub than I have in front of the VB IDE, which is why it's not advanced a great deal recently. But it's three months of holiday now and I'm away from the fun of London and stuck in the English countryside again and there's bugger all else to do. I need to get myself a job at some point, but there's always the evenings.
