Alex, I am posting this on the forum rather than sending you a personal e-mail because it might be of interest to others. I am going to be making available some libraries for others to use. Included will be some documentation. Naturally I need to mention Axe Software and Quest. What do you require for proper credit. Do you have a copyright block that I should include or specific copyright or trademark symbols. Also, what is the preferred format for documentation. Does the vast majority of your users have access to MS Word or does it need to be ASCII. What about Adobe Acrobat PDF files? Wizard |

Wizard, How about a plain text file? Everyone would have access to that. I would prefer that you don't use a PDF because they take so long to open, you need acrobat reader to read them, they don't look as good, etc. |

I'd suggest a "chm" Windows help format file, you can be sure everyone will have the reader (it's part of Windows) and Quest's own docs are produced in this way. Al |

Presumably you're creating Quest libraries that others can use !include to put in their games? If so, what would the point of crediting me be? Anybody who uses your library would know what Quest is, and the library would be 100% useless gibberish to anybody who wasn't a Quest user. By all means sing my praises here there and everywhere in your library and documentation if you really want to, but there's absolutely no need for it. |

Russell wrote:- quote: Too long to open? I'm mystified by that, pdf files are extremely compact and on my pretty run of the mill old PC open as quickly as any other file - much quicker than most in fact. As for not looking as good - well the screen image of a pdf file isn't as crisp as I'd like either, but that is not the point of it. If you want to transmit a document for someone to print out on receipt, pdf is superb - you KNOW it'll print beautifully and look exactly the same everywhere. This means it is great for moving government / legal forms etc etc around electronically. That is actually what the 'Portable Document Format' (pdf) was designed to achieve after all! Al |

Alex, the reason I was asking, is that I will be mentioning Axe Software in the documentation. In the US you cannot use someone elses company name or copyrighted material without their permission or proper credit. Maybe it is different in the UK. Anyway thank you. Wizard |

Hi guys.. Wizard, the copyright laws here are very similar. Might I suggest that you use something like:

Thanks Al, I will use that. Wizard |

quote: What you've said is true for copyrighted material but not for names. Names can't be copyrighted - all you can do is trademark them. And the trademark stops people from being able to call their product "Microsoft Windows" or whatever. You can refer to Microsoft, Windows, Tesco, Kwik Fit, MacDonalds, Axe Software etc. freely without needing to credit anybody for their existence. |
