OK, I've nailed the problem. It seems all my pondering over the intricacies of the ShellExecute API was meaningless as this bug does, once again, boil down to one of my "little" typing errors. The effect is that when you ask Quest to shell MYFILE.EXT, it tries to shell a MYFILE.EXT in the Quest directory, NOT in your game directory. Which is a bit silly - but I didn't spot it as I tend to stick all my ASL files in my Quest directory. And when I tested it from another directory, I copied the ASL and the file I was shelling to another directory - it worked, but unbeknown to me, Quest was shelling the copy of the file in the Quest directory.
Now, hopefully nobody is having any trouble shelling files in the Quest directory, or I'm at a complete loss.

....well, I hope this will be fixed in the next release :)
I'll cope by saying something like "These files need to be put in your Quest folder for them to run.... thankyou!".. plus the fact that they are optional, should fix the problem for now!
thankyou for the info (and thanx to you Tyrant...), the two of you stopped me re-installing Quest!!! PHEW!!

Indeed the next release has the shell problem fixed. At the moment I'm adding the remaining "missing bits" to QDK 3.0, and as soon as that's done (which could be days, weeks, months) I'll release Quest 3.0 final (QDK 3.0 will be officially at Beta 1 stage). Which will be nice.

And then Posh & Backs will come to your house and invite all their friends to a dinner party, you'll walk down the road to do some shopping and find a suitcase full of �100 notes. Then on a rush back to your house you'll see a tour bus full of bikini-dressed women infront of your house, wanting your "services" for their 2 year tour of the world...... which would be nice :)
