Author Topic:   ADRIFT vs Quest

Hello,

I have recently decided that I would like to write some interactive fiction. I tried out TADS and Inform, and I found languages a bit too hard to grasp. Then I decided to try out an authoring tool with a GUI. AGT seemed too old, so now I am thinking of using Quest.

Another tool, ADRIFT, has also caught my eye. I've tried a few games of each, and I must say that the ADRIFT ones are better. The Quest ones just seemed to be generic, and puzzlefests with no story or characters or plot. I'm sure this isn't the case for all of them, though, so could someone point me to a few good Quest games? Like, what is the best Quest game around?

I also have a few more questions. What tool is better ADRIFT or Quest? I know this forum will be a little biased, but could someone please give me the advantages and disadvantages of each? What's more powerful? What's more easy to use? What is cheaper?

As I said before, I've tried out ADRIFT, and at a first glance it seems better than Quest, but I'd like someone to tell me the differences between the two.

Thanks in advance,
Hsif Doow

Quest promises more, but doesn't fulfil its promises.

Well, at the moment quest is tolerating me, while I debug my game. I haven't used Adrift though, nor have I upgraded to quest 3.11.
One good thing with quest is that you can program with text editor and not QDK.
An Adrift user once told me it has similar problems too.

Adrift confused me at first : )

The GUI wasn't all that good for beginners.
Using Quests GUI is a *bit* better - but I think personally it's better to use a text editor for most of the time.

I think Adrift excells more at the graphical side, using maps ect... While Quest is more of a "text-based" thing, you know - like the origins of IF. It has a slightly more powerful language as well I think.

So what's the best Quest game around? What can show off it's capabilities?

I am not an avid programer and I have my problems with quest. I have programmed games in AGT and attempted to in TADS and I am going to check out adrift. My opinion of quest is outstanding. I have found away to do everything I have wanted to do. I have not got into any complex battle engines but like I said, I havent hit any brick walls yet.

I have to say, right about now there are no games showing off Quest's capabilities...

It's little fan base isn't enough for loads of people posting games, and many of us able to write good games are hard to find any time to do so.

I'm planning on creating a game or two soon - but with my college work (which just got a WHOLE lot more complicated BTW) I'm hard to find a couple of hours in the week to relax.

If you ask me, Quest is much more powerful and "BASIC" compared to ADRIFT. My game shows of some of Quest's abilities, it is called "Green Light". (See the archive).
