im currently working on a project called Ebersmile - New Born. i need peoples help on certain parts of the game. first off, i need people who know quest inside and out. secondly, i will need people with good map knowledge and sum1 who is imaginative (for descriptions). thirdly i will need artists...yes, computer GFX design artists, for pictures in the game and logos. and last but not least, web developers. i will need 2 web developers. 1) me, for the main stuff, 2) sum1 who knows flash 3) sum1 who knows java and advanded HTML programming. you may be all thinking, who go to so much trouble for a quest game. well for one, i enjoy it, and for another, i want to show people that quest is a great program for learners who will one day advance into making text games using VB 6 (nightmist for example). either contact me via this thread or by email. [email protected] . and, and taking part in making this game WILL mean you are part the NoGo Gaming team, and we give as much credit to the staff as the sun gives light to the earth. thanks for reading.

Well, for Map knowledge I guess you're talking about a WORLD map, and that might need you to draw the map on the screen (if anyone has played a couple of MUD's then you should know this happens in them) using ASCII. That is quite complicated, but not impossible. It would involve having a WHOLE map as an array and then cutting and pasting all around the characters' position - not too complicated in it's definition but a little hard to think about in coding terms.

I'm pretty imaginative. And I describe things TOO much IMO for short stories, ect... But I'm good for that.

I'm not an artist - sorry. I'm totally cr*d at drawing, music, ect...

I'm okay at web design I guess. I know Flash 5 a bit, but no good at Java, and only know what I need to know about HTML.

And one more thing... I only work in my spare time : )
I'm pretty busy a part of the time. But whenever I'm free I'll do whatever I can.

of course, each staff member for the game will have different positions, these will include....

Writers - for descriptions
Game developer - Me of course
Map builders - well, Map builders lol
Artists - for the GFX
musicians - for the music

and if i need other positions i will notify people on that. Staff members can have more than 1 positions, weather its, writer/artist, musician/artist, etc. i will be making a new email account for people who wish to help me on this game.

The email application should include....

Name:
Age:
Country:
Sex:
position you are interested in:
why you would make a good staff member:

i will put the email address on this thread as soon as i get it up, it will most likely be [email protected].

*to computer whizz* not exactly a WORLD map as such as it will not just be one map. there will be different towns, so each town will have its own map, or else the map will be too big to fit on the site. my main goal for now is to get the first town up and running, then we can get the game tested, and see what we can improve on, then we go into other areas, such as underground barracks, forests, and other towns. thats all for now i think. ;) ill post some more later.

the sites arnt up yet and im just doing the ebersmile email now. the first site that will be up is the nogo one obviously, and the ebersmile one cant go up until the game is released, i cant continue from the old game as ive lost my maps :S and also i think this is going to be hard, because i will be needing people to make changes to the game..IN-GAME, so for the next quest update i suggest this......

in-game (while you are playing) you can make changes to the file, and save it u know, like an in-game command for, for example...

/placeroom north, this will place an empty room north, then u can use other commands to change the details/descriptions to the room, then this will save in the actual file, this way staff members for the game can do it together instead of one staff doing something, then sending it to another staff member to do something and so on.

no offence, but i really dont like this forum, i cant modify my posts, i suggest one by YABB or something. ok....continued from my last post (which i forgot to add) when u edit a room ingame, a window will appear when u type /description set then u can add all the nessesary details needed (maybe the game properties window could appear). its a great idea.....:D

Well, the ingame editing thing is ok I guess - good for while people are playing the game.

For editing I suggest we create snippits of data that can then be added to a main .asl file held by, guess who.... YOU!
Now, if we each stick to certain area's like me developing the north a bit, you east ect... then as it's collected it can be added. Kinda like libraries... That'd be good actually cos if there's anything that need's updating the library could be updated and replaced without much fuss.

Yes, I've decided that libraries are the way to go on this one.

And although this board does have it's drawbacks I don't mind.
Alex could get an Ikonboard for free - and my one didn't have adverts/whatever. and it's pretty good - but if this saves on space ect... I wouldn't be bothered about it.

PS E-mail on the way tomorrow (got a little VB project I need to work on overnight to finish it.)

ty for your reply computer whizz. i think alex should read this thread lol, ive had no answer from him yet. now then...i dont know much about editing the asl file using wordpad or wotever, so today, im going to read every page in the help file (i think :o) so then i can get the grips with the program....the reason why is that, when u send me some code, how do i know where to put it? lol...ok, dont worry im a fast learner. :P

Well, for libraries it's easy since you just add the libraries reference to the file at the beginning, while with adding stuff to the files you just look at where it's supposed to go.

I like the idea of the libraries since you can have it added and then move the object to the certain place, or create the room using the type of room that is defined in the library.

Editing the file is a bit more harsh since it needs to be put in exactly the right place and can mess the whole thing up if done wrong. It's hard to debug since it'd be different code written by different people and it isn't easy to upgrade / add to since huge lumps from different area's need to be ripped out and replaced.

Are there any plans for a sophisticated Library system Alex? Where you can add on rooms to certain other rooms, or add objects in certain places?
It's not too hard I guess (since all we needed to do is add our own little start script to the library and have the main program run it - moving objects and creating rooms).

i still think making changes in-game is the best idea, its more easier, and we can talk to each other, and when u make changes it will save automatically on my computer from what you have done to the game on yours.
Computer Whizz posted 01-09-2002 04:12 BST
That would be nice I guess....

I wonder if Quest opens the whole file and loads it into memory. If it does than we can't edit it while it's running and so we are basically stuffed : )

I think it does, so unless Alex implements this "writing to file while server running" feature to the game it'll end there and we'll have to schedule down time, ect...

My e-mail hasn't come through yet since I am still working on this program I'm writing. As soon as it's finished the e-mail will get to you.

ty Computer Whizz. the only other suggestion i have, is if we all do a bit at a time, ill hold it for a week and work on it, then send it to another person then they hold it for a week and work on it etc etc etc. but, that wont get the game up in time. Im sure we will work out a way.
