Are you the only person with access to your computer? it sounds like the CD driver was removed or uninstalled. Why don't you try reloading it from the disks that have your OS on them? |

WHOA!!! before you try and install ANY new drivers establish where the fault actually lies! Look under 'system' and view devices (from 'control panel' in Win 95/98) my guess is that you will find that either the CDROM drive is visible but has a warning sign by it (meaning there is a driver problem) OR (more likely if there's no horrible warnings being shown and the drive had completely vanished) your secondary IDE controller will have the warning symbol instead - either way you should be able to rescue the situation quite easily. It's not ALWAYS the case that a CD ROM is attched to the secondary IDE controller, but the vast majority are. Experience tells me to look here for the fault! Al |

OK. Like Al said (or I got the feeling he said it!) right click on "my computer" on the desktop and go down to properties. Once here click on the device manager tab and search around for your CD drive. If it is not there then I'd say this: 1> Check under the hood of the PC. Check the connections of the CD drive. 2> Re-check the devices to see if it is still not there. If this doesn't fix it then do the following: Computer Whizz |

ahh, it's driving me crazy! When I get home (I'm using a computer somewhere else) I'll try the things you guys said thanks for all your support! I think maybe the CD-Rom has just chucked a psycho and it doesn't work anymore cuz I can't eject it at all and that has to mean something. It's my dads computer and we were thinking of changing it so we only have one hard drive thingy (just C not C & D). I originally thought that maybe he had accidently deleted the drive when he was looking around in DriveSpace but now I am not so sure. Well anyway thanks for the advice, I'll keep ya posted. :) PS. What's current in QUEST-WORLD?? |

hardwear =). ok now when you turn on your computer there should be power to the cd-rom weather it the computer sees it or not. turn on your computer and press the eject button. if it doesn't work then it's one of 3 things. (after you try there ideas) 1. the ribbon is bad from the mother board to rom (make sure the maked cable is at pin one!) 2. the power supply is bad just use a diffrent line from the power supply. 3. the rom is dead (happen sometimes) just get a new one. |

oh one more thing make sure you are gounder before touching anything in the comp. touch the mettle screw on the light swicth if there was even the slightest shock that could have been the shock that messed up your comp. |

You should un-plug the PC before you even consider thinking about making an electronic signal start to suggest that you should unscrew the hood on it! But, as both he and I stated, it should eject as soon as power gets to the CD rom. Check every connection, re-check, change power connections, test leads with different CD rom, finally if none of this works, get in a proffesional and see if there is something wrong hardware side. If all is well then you PC is majorly f*ck*d up cos the software is somehow restricting the power to the CD rom ----- Which I don't think it can do at startup anyway!! Computer Whizz |

When I get home, I'll try out those suggestions. The CD-Room doesn't eject! |

Sometimes the ide cable just comes off. Make sure that it is plugged into the cd rom and the motherboard. Does your cd have a little light on it when it is powered on (is there a little light which shows it is getting electricity?) if there is, is it coming on? |

I'm so confident, I'll place a bet that it is either: A> The power lead, B> The CD rom's power plug, or C> The CD rom itself is faulty somewhere. It CAN'T be the driver/OS. Unless you use Unix or Linux, since that has stopped me ejecting (weird!!!). But you use Win 98 - probably. Computer Whizz |

Thanks for all your help people, my dad and I finally found out what the problem was and now it is fixed. Some wire wasn't in properly...anyway, but there is still another problem that I hope you guys can help me out with. I bought a Yoga CD-Rom from a book shop that was having a sale (only seven dollars - cool eh!). Anyway, I started the application and everything was working fine until I went to a section in the program where you can view Yoga videos on how to do specific Yoga postures, meditation, etc. Where the video was meant to be, I got a white square with diagonal black lines in the backround. On the square I got a message saying: Video not available, cannot find 'vids:IV32' decompressor. That is exactly how it was printed. On later inspection, I searched the CD for .avi files and what-do-ya-know! I found dozens of them that are meant to be Yoga positions and postures. I double clicked on one of them and it was opened using Windows Media Player (version 6.4.07.1116). After much fuss, a window came up with a yellow triangle-shaped exclamation sign (!) and next to that image was the message: Unable to download an appropriate decompressor. On the window it had three buttons saying CLOSE, ADVANCED >>> and MORE HELP. Neither of these buttons proved useful. What do I do? I need further help, the Yoga software is for my mum! BTW. I also noticed the same problem about six months ago when I played the game Age of Empires and that same message came up before the game started. Obviously, before the game starts, the computer runs an introduction AVI file that has the Microsoft logo on it etc. |

quote: Carlii, you're missing a video codec (coder-decoder) and you are running an old out of date version of Windows Media Player. I think I still have a downloaded IV32 codec installer for the old Media Player somewhere, but first suggestion is to do a web search for the missing codec and install it - and upgrade your Media Player. Carlii:- The INDEO (Intel Video ) codec(s) you are missing (IV32) SHOULD be included in the PC version of the Indeo codecs download available from thie following site... ( Ligos have bought the INDEO technology from Intel ) http://www.ligos.com/index.phtml?pi=103&n1=products&n2=indeo&n3=download#downloads No promises 'cause I can't see/test your P.C. - but give this a shot - being careful to follow install instructions TO THE LETTER! I think I understand.... Can you tell me a little about these 'codec' things you speak of. What exactly are they? |

Of CODECS Audio and video is usually compressed (think like zipped) to take up less space when stored on a hard drive / CD and then when played 'decompressed' on the fly to show on screen/ speakers. there are many 'types' of compression available from different companies. These are the "CoDec's" (coders/decoders or compressors/decompressors depending on who you read) of which we speak. The one you are missing seems to be the very popular INTEL version - most people are aware of two other very common ones "realmedia" and MPEG - this is the same sort of thing.
